Look, I get that we’re all busy people. No down time. Work smarter, not harder. Blah blah etc. But I have to draw a line at buying clarified butter.
In my most recent trip to the grocery store, I was in the dairy section stocking up. While there, I stumbled on this gem. While I am absolutely certain that this is a ‘world class’ clarified butter… It’s also $7.50 for something that’s really really REALLY easy to make.
For the clarified butter impaired.. Here are 3 steps.
- You put a stick of butter in a sauce pan.
- You melt the butter.
- You scoop off the white foamy stuff that floats on top of the pretty yellow stuff and discard it.
Are people seriously so lazy they’ll spend triple what something is worth to save 5 minutes of easy work?
Never mind. Please don’t answer that.
Every time I see a pre-made anything these days, my go-to is the question, how could I make that myself? I’ve learned how to make bread, hamburger buns, tortillas, pasta, and more. It is pretty sad that all of these things are becoming pre-made and the joy of baking and cooking is disappearing. Thanks for posting this.
Greetings from north of the Arctic Circle.
Admittedly, I’m not into bread making but I’m totally with you on everything else. I think my next kick will be curing meats. I am not entirely sure though.
You should try cheese making, if you haven’t already. There are some really simple recipes for goat cheese online that don’t require anything other than household stuff.. (goat milk and lemon)
Cheese is definitely on my list!
I think I’m going to try curing meat next. Maybe start with some salmon and work my way up.
I made my own lox! It turned out fabulous. That’s a good place to start. Just need salmon, salt, sugar and pepper.
