The Worlds Best BLT.

Admittedly I have limited BLT eating experience, and this might be the first one I’ve ever made for myself. My mom made them when I was a kid every so often, but for the most part I remember the whole bacon-lettuce-tomato experience as being somewhat lackluster.  Not bad, but nothing to blog about, really. 😀

Clearly my recollection about the entire experience is a little faulty, or perhaps it was the combination of ingredients.. but this experience bordered on religious. The ingredients:

2 thick slices of sour dough bread

Now, admittedly this is grocery store bought. I was gonna make some bread but then I was like, wait. I hate baking. Let me just buy some sour dough.

4 pieces of  thick cut bacon

I would suggest making your own bacon. The cost difference is negligible at worst, and works in your favor the way I calculated. Did I mention I recently made bacon?

1 tbsp of homemade mayo

This was actually a new one for me too. I tried to do it once, but I did it kind of half ass and then lost interest. This time I broke out the immersion blender and did it right. Bask in its ‘slopped in a cup’ glory.

1 sandwich sized leaf of lettuce

Not iceberg lettuce. Never iceberg. It’s watery crap. I didn’t realize lettuce had any flavor until I was like 16. Use romaine. Really.

1 slice hothouse tomato

Sadly, my tomato plants aren’t producing yet.. but soon.. soon..

1 tbsp butter

Yep.. I made the butter last weekend. I just melted a pat in the pan, then put the bread in to toast it on one side. 🙂

salt and pepper

Yes. Even this needs salt and pepper.. not much salt.. but it does.

Anyway, so once the bread was toasted, I put it off to the side. I put my bacon in the pan I toasted the bread in, on medium heat. Cooked the bacon until brown but not crispy. God knows, if it’s crispy in the pan, it will disintegrate on the plate.

I sliced up a tomato, and snagged my lettuce leaf.. slathered the mayo on the bread and assembled the worlds most epic BLT ever. Let the jealousy commence.

  1. Jealousy is in full gear! 🙂

Looks amazing! I can’t wait to see the carbonara! I am super jealous and I just had a great BLT a few days ago 🙂

  3. That looks to die for! I haven’t had a real BLT since I’ve been in the ME (we only have access to ‘beef’ bacon, which is not bacon!)

  4. Yep! Totally jealous right now!!! In a good way of course!

  5. I want that, right now, dammit! Two notes- homemade mayo is better than anything else. I like to add just a hint of lime to it. Yum. Secondly, iceberg lettuce should be banned. At the very least banned from sandwich life. The end.

    • This is the first time I bothered to make my own. I totally get the mayo thing in a way that I didn’t before. It’s fabulous. The lime sounds intriguing. I’ll have to try that next time. And iceberg lettuce just sucks. Aside from wedge salads, it really has no purpose in my kitchen. Even the baby cat won’t eat it… and she eats paper.
